Hello readers of RCS! Today is April 15th, which marks exactly one year since I officially launched www.reigncanesports.com. I want to take this time to document our journey so far, and talk about our goals going forward; but most importantly to offer a sincere thank you to everyone who has visited our site.
The way I came up with Reign Cane Sports is a pretty amusing story. One day while listening to my differential equations teacher drone on about Laplace Transforms, I began to doodle in my notebook. I knew I was going to move into an apartment the following year, so I had been thinking of a Tulsa-themed design that I could put on my living room table, figured it would be a cool summer project. When thinking for inspirations for designs, I thought of one that I’ve always admired. I am a huge golf fan, so after seeing the Masters logo hundreds of times the previous week, I tried to see if I could recreate it with the Tulsa flag and the state of Oklahoma.
After drawing the design, I showed my girlfriend (whom was actually trying to pay attention in class). She said she liked it, saying that TU should make something like that a logo for their athletics. I am sure that she was just pandering, but her telling me this is what caused me to think about another application for this logo. Instead of a design for a coffee table, maybe I could use it as a logo for a sports blog…
Weeks of practice finally culminated to the annual spring game last Saturday at H.A. Chapman stadium. Coming off one of the best seasons in school history, the Golden Hurricane stormed the field with optimism, confidence, and a bit of uncertainty. Last season it seemed the question surrounding Tulsa football was “What is this team’s ceiling?” After the notable improvement in 2015, expectations were sky-high for Monty’s 2016 squad, and boy they lived up to the hype.
For the 2017 squad, it seems the question is “What is this team’s floor?” There are certainly proven commodities on this year’s team (Brubaker, Brewer, the offensive line), but TU lost captains on both offense and defense, the leading passer in school history, a 1,000 yard rusher, and two 1,000 yard receivers. That is a lot to replace, and with a tough non-conference slate against 4 teams that went to bowl games last season, Tulsa will have to find answers to those questions early.
This Wednesday the 7-7 (1-1) Tulsa Golden Hurricane will host the 12-4 (2-1) Memphis Tigers. Tulsa is coming into this game reeling a bit, losers of 3 of their last 4 games, including a close 61-64 loss to Houston last week, while Memphis, winners of 3 straight, seem to be playing their best basketball of the season. The Tigers thumped a good South Carolina team 70-56 to close nonconference play, and have followed that up with a 9 point win over UConn, and a 21 point beat down at Tulane.
I will be posting my rankings of all the uniforms Tulsa wore this year after Christmas, but Codie Mullins on Twitter suggested that we let the fans suggest their opinion as well. I liked that idea, so I created a google form, rank your favorite uniforms by clicking here.
I know it can be difficult if you don’t love uniforms like I do, but I want to hear everyone’s opinion so please take 5 minutes to fill it out. I’ll post the results whenever I rank mine after Christmas.
