Thoughts on Tulsa Falling to Toledo

Tags :

Losing on a last second field goal is probably one of the more painful ways to lose. It is a slow, agonizing death that ends with a 150-pound guy running around the field like he just won a Super Bowl by himself. Tulsa’s loss to Toledo on Saturday night was all that and more. The Hurricane saw a 14-point halftime lead evaporate, as the Rockets scored on 6 of their 7 possessions in the second half. TU came into the game as an 8.5 point underdog, so there may be some positives to take away from Ohio, but mostly it is frustration. Despite the solid showing my mind is on glaring problems that we’ve seen every week with this team. Let’s get into my thoughts.

Game Preview – Toledo

Tags :

Tulsa is a double-digit underdog this week as they travel north to Toledo to take on the (2-0) Toledo Rockets. The Rockets carry high expectations and confidence into this season. They were picked by most to win the MAC for their first time ever, largely due to the fact that they have known commodities offensively; a NFL caliber QB, a 1200 yard receiver, and an offensive line that can get the job done. This non-conference game is a must-win for Toledo if they are to maintain their high level of confidence. Let’s get into my preview.

Thoughts on Tulsa vs ULL

Tags :

Sorry for being late on getting this out!

In my game preview I predicted TU would struggle in the first quarter, but open it up in the second half and cruise to a 24 point victory. It turned out that I was right in that aspect, but I also said “I don’t see ULL scoring more than 20 meaningful points.”

Let’s get to my thoughts.

Game Preview – Louisiana Lafayette

Tags :

Tulsa’s 2017 non-conference schedule features 4 teams that all went to bowl games a season ago. The next opponent for the Golden Hurricane is (1-0) Louisiana Lafayette. This will be the home-opener for Tulsa, Montgomery is 2-0 in such games. Tulsa is looking for some answers on both sides of the ball after last week’s blowout loss, the Ragin Cajuns are the perfect challenge for those question marks. Lafayette is sound-enough to provide a challenge, so TU will have to execute well if they want an easy victory. Here is my preview for this week.

Thoughts on the OSU Game

Tags :

Last year I traveled to Ohio State to watch Tulsa play the Buckeyes. Right before the game started, the Ohio State players lined up in the tunnel directly across from me, interlocked arms, and started swaying side to side. That was a moment I wont soon forget; the iconic scarlet and gray, the deafening 100,000 person-roar, Urban Meyer leading the charge, it was amazing. It was at that moment that my TU optimism faded, and it dawned on me how daunting the task ahead was.

Last night when Rudolph dropped a 40 yard bomb to Tyron Johnson, and the very next possession a 40 yard bomb to James Washington was the equivalent to what I experienced in Columbus. 2-first round receivers running deep every play, a first-round QB throwing it to them, and a running back who ran for over 1000 yards as a true freshman last year. Oklahoma State has an extremely talented offense, and it was on full-display last night. Let’s get to my thoughts.

Oklahoma State – Game Preview

The time has come. After months of waiting Tulsa football returns on Thursday. Standing in front of them is the 10th ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. This game will be the 59th time OSU and TU have played an official football game against each other, which makes the Cowboys Tulsa’s 2nd most common opponent. Tulsa has won 22 of those meetings, but hasn’t won in Stillwater since 1951. Is it possible for TU to pull off the upset in Boone Pickens? Maybe, let’s get to this week’s preview.

My AAC Preseason All-Conference Team

Tags :

Ladies and gentleman, we are now under 50 days until the start of football season. The 2017 Golden Hurricane will be taking the field under the lights at Boone Pickens Stadium before you know it! Until then, we are stuck in the dog days of summer where I spend my free time swimming, golfing, ignoring baseball, and getting way too invested into college football.

One of the things the media offers college football fanatics in July and August is conference previews. AAC media days is this week, which means the USA Today conference preview is right around the corner. This may come as a surprise, but the Reign Cane guys don’t currently hold a media vote! However if we did, here is how I would vote…

The QB Battle

Tags :

The past two years Tulsa football has had the luxury of knowing exactly who their QB was. Every Saturday the players, the coaches, and the fans all knew and accepted that Dane Evans would be the signal caller. This year, Tulsa does not have that luxury.

5 Players That Stood Out In Saturday’s Spring Game

Weeks of practice finally culminated to the annual spring game last Saturday at H.A. Chapman stadium. Coming off one of the best seasons in school history, the Golden Hurricane stormed the field with optimism, confidence, and a bit of uncertainty. Last season it seemed the question surrounding Tulsa football was “What is this team’s ceiling?” After the notable improvement in 2015, expectations were sky-high for Monty’s 2016 squad, and boy they lived up to the hype.

For the 2017 squad, it seems the question is “What is this team’s floor?” There are certainly proven commodities on this year’s team (Brubaker, Brewer, the offensive line), but TU lost captains on both offense and defense, the leading passer in school history, a 1,000 yard rusher, and two 1,000 yard receivers. That is a lot to replace, and with a tough non-conference slate against 4 teams that went to bowl games last season, Tulsa will have to find answers to those questions early.
