Great impromptu podcast, Hunter, on a night when you surely didn’t feel like doing it. I was at the game and like I told a friend in the Rey. Ctr. after it ended “this was painful.”
And, as much as it felt that way to you, too, you still managed to force some positives out of it.

A friend and I have taken up the habit of waiting in the tunnel for the players so we can slap hands or bump fists with them, but this time I just couldn’t get myself to do it. My rationale was that if I were on the team, I wouldn’t feel like doing that, I’d just want to take a shower and get the hell out … sort of like how I wouldn’t want to slap hands with teammates after missing a free throw (when did that dumb practice start?).

Anyway, I think you did a great job in summing up how a lot of us felt, under difficult circumstances.

Regarding the hand-slaps after missed free throws, of course I get it … moral support to show “we’re behind you” and all that.

It reminds me of how every kid on a little league team gets a trophy just for participating, even if the team finished dead last. The boss of our research group is from “the old country” (Poland) and I remember him commenting on that and finding it comical. Old school: congrats for accomplishment; silence “we feel your pain” for lack thereof.

My opinion: by college, they’re big boys and girls. They don’t need to do something just because every other team in the country does it. Isn’t one of the goals in college learning to think independently?

      OK, end of rant. Lol.

I offered a little writing quiz to the students in our research group, all of whom are grad students and internationals.

It was mainly for fun, so I said the winner would get a Reese’s peanut butter cup.

The winning entry came in last night. I started to take a peanut butter cup to all participants (about five) and then said to myself “wait a minute, I just posted that merely participating doesn’t merit a reward.”

I delivered the peanut butter cup to the winner only this afternoon. Now I have more for myself, heh.
